Business Education Training - BizAid Extended!

The City of Austin's Small Business Development Program has extended the Business Education contract through the end of January 2008. 
To register for Business Plan Writing visit the City Of Austin’s Small Business Development Program website at www.cityofaustin.org/sbdp .

All classes are held at the International Center of Austin located at 201 E. 2nd Street downtown Austin. The fee for each course is $25 and includes course materials, parking, and a light lunch.

  • Business Plan Wrting I, Monday, March 10th, 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm
  • Busines Plan Writing II, Tuesday, March 11th, 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm

2008 Bigidea Day Competition


 
BiGAustin announces their 2008 BiGidea day Business Plan Competition. This new addition to the annual big awards day will offer at a $5000 cash prize to the entrepreneur wit the best business plan.
 
The criteria for entering the competition are:
  1. The plan must be an original idea for a business in operation for five years or less.
  2. The business must be in legal operation for 6 months.
  3. The principal business operations of the business must be located in Central Texas.
  4. The business must not have a revenue that exceeds $500,000.
 
Entries are being acception online, by fax or in person. To enter the competition visit www.bigaustin.org. Entries much be received by 5p.m, March 21.

 

Help Get Austin Financially Fit

A coalition of Austin organizations and officials are teaming up to create Financial Fitness Greater Austin 2008, the week of April 21st, to highlight National Financial Literacy Month and promote financial education in our community.  Organizing partners include the Capital City African American Chamber of Commerce, the Alliance for Economic Inclusion, Senator Kirk Watson, and the Financial Literacy Coalition of Central Texas.  Over 25 local banks, credit unions, professional organizations, and nonprofits have signed on to support and promote the initiative.

Bank of America Is Currently Accepting Applications for Neighborhood Excellence Initiative

Bank of America in Austin is now accepting applications for the Neighborhood Excellence Initiative TM. Through this initiative, Bank of America has contributed $900,000 in Austin and over $70 million in communities across the country.
 
The Neighborhood Excellence Initiative uniquely provides capacity-building opportunities through leadership development and mission based funding to organizations addressing the most pressing needs of our communities. In addition, the program encourages individuals who are passionate about improving their communities through recognition and leadership development.

UT at Austin's Diabetes Coaching Program

Join Dr. Mary Steinhardt of the University of Texas at Austin for the Diabetes Coaching Program. This eight-week program is designed to help individuals diagnosed with type 2 diabetes lead more productive lives. It will consist of 8 classes and a follow-up session conducted at Olivet Baptist Church, 1179 San Bernard Street. To qualify for this research study you must:
 
· Be between 40 and 65 years of age
· Have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes
· Be African American
· Have a baseline HbA1c greater than 8%
· Be overweight with a BMI greater than 25
· Be under the care of a medical physician for diabetes
· Be available to attend all of the eight group meetings.
 
Participants in this study can expect to receive up to $100 cash, their Glycosylated Hemoglobin score, Fasting Blood Glucoses Score, Cholesterol Levels, and blood pressure.
