Sustainability Efforts Recognized

Capital Metro was recently recognized as a WasteSMART business by the City of Austin. The agency’s commitment to environmental sustainability through recycling and waste reduction was praised by the program.

Capital Metro’s Sustainability Team implemented a new recycling program in January 2009 with an educational campaign titled “Clean Up Your Act”. Since implementation, Capital Metro has recycled 20 tons of paper, a 158% increase over the same time last year. Recycling that amount has reduced landfill space by 67 cubic yards and saved 348 trees.

WasteSMART is program of the City of Austin Solid Waste Services that recognizes local businesses that reduce and recycle waste and buy recycled products. Currently, there are 20 local businesses recognized as WasteSMART partners.
