A Note From Charlotte
Executive Director
by Charlotte Fox
First, thank you to all of those who participated in and/or sponsored the 2009 Alaska Arts and Culture Conference, especially those of you who brought gifts from your communities for the door prizes. This little perk of the conference exceeded our wildest dreams. Actually, the entire gathering provided a much needed in-the-dark-of-January boost to all of us. I also want to recognize Roger Schmidt for his morning trombone; Kari Groven and Jason Caputo for their lovely guitar and vocals, John Damberg’s Advanced Jazz Ensemble; and Peggy Shumaker and Kes Woodward for the lovely broadsides. For what is an arts conference without art? And yes, we won’t wait another nine years to sponsor another conference – you’ve convinced us of that!

Inspiration Found
by By Cass Pook SE Alaska Indian Cultural Center Demonstrating Artist, Sitka
I can’t say enough about the Alaska Arts and Culture Conference and the Alaska Native Artists Summit hosted by the Alaska State Council on the Arts the end of January! I had no idea what to expect. It was amazing to be surrounded by such Alaska talent. The last Alaska Arts and Culture Conference happened almost ten years ago. The Alaska State Council on the Arts heard loud and clear from all of the attendees at this gathering, please host another conference soon – maybe in two or three years. If you didn’t get a chance to come to this conference don’t miss the next one. You will be in for the ride of your life! What else could you expect anyway when you get a large group of artists gather together?

Arts in Education
by Ruth Glenn
A great conference was held in Anchorage the last week end in January. There were some really fine workshops on Arts in Education led by Arts Educators and Artists. It was inspiring to see so many people interested in furthering the arts in our education system. For education activities highlights were the Juneau workshops being offered to teaching artists to help them become familiar with integrating arts into the classroom, fund raising strategies from successful schools to help fund arts programs, and inspiring talks by several artists. If you are interested in getting more information on the ideas presented please call the Arts in Education office at 269-6682.
