The Proper way to store Wine
by Francois Cinq-Mars
A few tips for storing wine.
Not all wine is meant to age; in fact only about 5% of all the wine in the world are cellar worthy. So if you are drinking moderately priced table wines there are only a few things that you need to know.
Constant temperature
Between 50 and 60 degrees Fahrenheit is ideal, with as little fluctuation as possible. I keep my wine at 52 degrees but that’s just a personal choice.
High humidity
A dry cork leads to oxidized wine, you should maintain a constant humidity of between 50-75 percent and always store your bottles on their side or at a 45-degree angle to keep the cork wet.
Darkness
Light is energy and light can cause accelerated chemical changes in wine, when storing wine it is always best to find the darkest place to keep your wine. If you have a wine refrigerator look for one that has UV resistant glass.
Now that you know how to store wine, here are a few tips for enjoying your wine.
Never drink your white wines to cold, if you like ice cold wine your wasting the flavors in your wine, I prefer my white wines at about 52-55 degrees this allows the wine to show off its fruit and natural character.
Never drink your red wines to warm, a red wine that is 75-80 degrees will taste washed out and acidic. I like my red wine served between 60-65 degrees, this allows the wine to display all of the fruit and acidity that pairs so well with food.
