Members Warned about Unsolicited Invoices
The BBB is alerting members about unauthorized invoices currently being sent in the South Plains to businesses for advertising in a directory of web addresses.

The company that is sending these "phony" invoices is PREMIUM PUBLICATIONS out of Champlain, NY. This company is another name being used by HORIZON PRINTING which, according to the Buffalo, NY BBB, has an unsatisfactory record with the BBB due to unanswered complaints. Just click here to view the entire BBB Buffalo report.

Please warn anyone at your company that answers the phones to be alert to a sales pitch to "renew" your listing. And to those that pay your invoices to question any invoice that doesn't look familiar.

Virginia Tech Tragedy May Spawn Phishing Sites

In recent years, US-CERT (a federal agency that was established in 2003 to protect the nation’s internet infrastructure; www.us-cert.gov) has received reports of an increased number of phishing sites set up in the wake of tragedies and natural disasters.

Please remain cautious when receiving unsolicited email that could be a potential phishing attempt.

Phishing emails may appear as requests for donations from a charitable organization asking the users to click on a link that will then take them to a fraudulent web site that appears to be a legitimate charity. The users are then asked to provide personal information that can further expose them to future compromises. Users are encouraged to take the following measures to protect themselves from this type of phishing attack:

* Do not follow unsolicited web links received in email messages.
* Contact your financial institution immediately if you believe your account and/or financial information has been compromised.
* Verify the legitimacy of the email by contacting the company directly through a trusted contact number.

If you are solicited, call the BBB on one of your member lines:  806.763.5554 or 1.800.658.6156 or send an email to:  members@bbbsouthplains.org
