Multi-Level or Pyramid?

Your Better Business Bureau has just become aware of a possible scam that has hit other parts of Texas recently and may be headed to Lubbock!

It is our understanding that representatives of PRT TRAVEL (also known as GLOBAL TRAVEL TRENDS and GT TRENDS) out of California are holding a meeting here in Lubbock on Friday, April 29 to recruit people to become an associate travel agent by selling their online training manual.  Representatives will also benefit monetarily by recruiting as many people as they can into the program.

Information shared with us by the BBB Amarillo indicates that the International Air Transport Association (IATA) cards the new “travel agents” are receiving are not valid.

It is also our understanding that the initial investment is over $200 and that you must maintain a web site at a cost of $20 per month.

According to a news story in the Amarillo Globe News April 21, 2005, two travel industry groups (IATA and Outside Sales Support Network) have revoked PRT’s membership and recommend interested consumers check out the discount code given on the identification cards through a web site:  www.checkacode.com  Global Travel Trends CEO Ron Armstrong claims that GT Trends is affiliated with the Association of Retail Travel Agents (ARTA), but the vice president of operations states that they have never been a member, according to the news article.

BBBs are working with law enforcement and other agencies to find out more about this company.  Pyramid schemes will sometimes disguise themselves as multi-level marketing plans, but there is no such thing as easy money OR success without a lot of hard work.

If you have any information about this company or any of its representatives, your BBB will appreciate hearing from you.  Just call on one of your member lines:  806.763.5554 or 1.800.658.6156; or email us:  members@bbbsouthplains.org
