With summer approaching, you may be wondering what you are going to do about the ever-rising prices of gasoline and how you might be able to improve your gas mileage.
The price of gas has gone up to $2 in some places and may get higher before summer is over. Your BBB has always monitored, and challenged, gas saving devices over the years and we have seen numerous scams on how to save money by attaching special gas caps or putting fuel additives in your gas tanks. The BBB recommends that you follow these tips:
* Check with your mechanic before adding any fuel-saving device to your vehicle. You could 'void' a manufacturer's warranty and/or cause serious engine damage by adding after-market devices
* Watch how you drive; combine trips when possible
* Choose the right octane level for your vehicle
* Keep your tires inflated at manufacturer's suggested level; properly inflated tires provide less road resistance and could improve fuel efficiency
* Keep your vehicle, especially the engine, well-maintained according to the manufacturer's suggested recommendations; make sure oil is changed regularly and get tune-ups based on owner's manual
