Largest gift in Baylor's history benefits Charles A. Sammons Cancer Center.
On Sept. 24, 2009, Baylor Health Care System announced gifts exceeding $20 million to benefit the Baylor Charles A. Sammons Cancer Center. Donated by Sammons Enterprises, Inc. and the estate of founder Charles A. Sammons, these record-setting contributions will help build a new 450,000-square-foot outpatient cancer center (to open in spring of 2011) and a dedicated cancer hospital scheduled to open in 2013.

Building a Legacy
Sammons and Baylor advance cancer care in North Texas.
As a teenager, Charles A. Sammons worked to help fund his sisters’ college educations. When both sisters were afflicted with breast cancer at a fairly young age, he again acted on their behalf. Their struggles personalized his lifelong support of Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas. In June 1955, the hospital installed a Theratron Cobalt 60-Beam Therapy Unit, the leading-edge technology of its day for treating cancer. The unit was the first of its kind in Dallas and among the first in the entire southwest. It was purchased with a $75,000 gift from Charles Sammons.

BESSY: Robotic Telemedicine
New technology enhances patient care.
A new employee rolls the halls of the intensive care unit (ICU) at Baylor Medical Center at Waxahachie. An offsite physician access robot, nicknamed BESSY by staff (Baylor Extra Specialist Seeing You), is part of a new technology called robotic telemedicine that only a handful of hospitals practice nationwide.
