Arizona, AICPA, and other State Societies Urge CPA Exemption from FTC "Red Flags" Rule
Late last month the Federal Trade Commission announced it was postponing enforcement of its "Red Flags" rule from Aug. 1 to Nov. 1. The rule's goal is to deter identity theft and is mandated by the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act of 2003. It requires financial institutions and creditors to implement programs to detect, prevent and mitigate identity theft. In light of concerns about the rule's broad application and its possible impact on CPAs and small business, the ASCPA and the AICPA on Aug. 4 sent a letter to the FTC urging an exemption for CPAs.  Members will be kept informed of any actions the FTC takes related to CPAs and enforcement of the Red Flags rule.

Accounting Degrees Continue Upward Trend
The number of students graduating with accounting degrees in the 2007-08 school year surpassed the previous year’s record level, according to a new report by the AICPA. More than 66,000 achieved bachelor’s and master’s degrees in accounting, 3.5 percent higher than in 2006-07. This represents the largest number of graduates since 1972, the year the AICPA began tracking the data, according to the report, 2009 Trends in the Supply of Accounting Graduates and the Demand for Public Accounting Recruits. The gender ratio was 51 percent female and 49 percent male.
