Senate’s Pipeline Safety Hearing

On Nov. 16, the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation held a hearing on reauthorization of the pipeline safety program. Tim Felt of Explorer Pipeline testified for AOPL and API. The hearing statements can be read at Reauthorization Hearings. After the hearing, Committee Chairman Ted Stevens (R-AK) and Committee Co-Chairman Daniel Inouye (D-HI) directed their staffs to determine if the Senate could pass the legislation that same day, before Congress adjourned for its Thanksgiving break. While that couldn’t be managed, AOPL believes that Stevens and Inouye intend to get reauthorization approved this year, before the current Congress adjourns. In the meantime, House and Senate staffs will work on resolving the differences between their respective bills, with the goal of being ready to pass legislation soon after Congress returns on Dec. 4.
