We are nearing the end of 2004 and it’s time to begin looking ahead to the coming year and the focus of the Chamber. Our Board of Directors will meet in a planning retreat during the early part of December where we will review the current programs and benefits, discuss what to keep or not and how to fund daily operations.

Help Those In Need

Are you expecting a new cell phone this holiday season and wondering what to do with your old one? Don’t throw it away as it contains toxic materials that could seep into our ground water if it sits in a landfill. Instead, you can dispose of your phone responsibly, benefit charity at the same time, and earn a tax deduction for your trouble.

The County Line
by Joe Jaynes, County Commissioner

In the 1999 county bond election, voters approved almost $5 million in bonds so that Collin County could partner with local cities and nonprofits in the expansion and, in some cases, the creation of park programs. Voters realized that it is critical that we preserve open space before the county, with its ever-increasing development, becomes all glass and concrete. The $5 million has played a major role in generating over $20 million in park projects countywide. In the 2003 county bond election, voters approved $11 million in bonds so that Collin County could again partner with local cities and nonprofits in the acquisition and development of more parks and open spaces.

Capitol Steps
by State Rep. Ken Paxton

No issue has driven Rep. Paxton's legislative agenda more than the creation of a sound solution for the public school finance crisis in Texas. In August, the district court found the following: The State’s current school finance system (i.e., "Robin Hood") fails to provide an adequate suitable education as required by Article VII, section 1 of the Texas Constitution. The issue of school finance is a top priority for the Legislature next session, which begins January 11th, 2005. In addition to school finance, Rep. Paxton discusses several issues such as the Texas Film Commission, Texas Adopt a Beach program, Texas "Do Not Call" List.
