The May 3rd election is now over with only 3% of the registered voters in Allen exercising their right to vote. What happens in elections (especially local elections) can be extremely important to our member businesses. What happens on the City Council, the ordinances, the tax rates, the decisions on infrastructure and services are all vitally important to Allen businesses.

The Moving Wall of Allen, Inc. is bringing The Moving Wall to Bethany Lakes Park in Allen, May 24 through May 30, 2003. The Moving Wall of Allen, Inc. provides the opportunity for the community to pay their respects to the memory of those who lost their lives during the Vietnam War.

Graduation Set for June 12
Leadership Allen Class IV with Secretary of State Gwen Shea

The Leadership Allen Class XIV recently traveled to Austin as one of their class sessions and had the opportunity to visit with Secretary of State Gwyn Shea, Senator Florence Shapiro and Representative Ken Paxton. After touring the Capitol and the Bob Bullock Museum, they did some serious shopping and traveled to 6th Street for dinner. Their graduation ceremony is set for June 12th at the Hilton Garden Inn. Local celebrity Burt Gilliam will act as emcee. For tickets or additional information, contact the chamber office at 972-727-5585.

Sponsored by the Dallas Mayor's Committee

Disabilities do not acknowledge gender, ethnic background, age or social status. The Dallas Mayor's Committee is an organization dedicated to enriching the lives of people with disabilities and works with the Governor’s Committee and other city committees to make the state of Texas one of the most progressive states in the hiring of the disabled. The DMC scholarship program was established to recognize and aid deserving students with disabilities in the pursuit of continuing education.

Taking Charge

Collin County Committee on Aging
The "Silver Threads Community Store" at 600 N. Tennessee Street in McKinney opened its doors on May 3, 2003.  The store offers gently used and new merchandise at very reasonable prices.  Tax deductible donations of clothing, household items, small appliances, furniture, books, toys and decorative items are now being accepted daily from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday.  Pick up of donations can be arranged by calling 972-562-6753.  All proceeds will go to fund Meals On Wheels, CCART and Caregiver Support for the citizens of Collin County.

Race for the Cure
On Saturday, June 7, 2003, over 10,000 people will celebrate a winning battle against breast cancer.  Men, women and children of all ages and athletic abilities will take part in the Collin County Regional Affiliate's Thirteenth Komen Plano Race for the Cure.  The race is an opportunity for thousands of men and women, running or walking, to join in the fight against breast cancer in their communities.  If you have questions or would like additional information, call 972-712-1990 or
