Chairman's Message
by Sheila McKinney, Presbyterian Hospital of Allen
We often spend time promoting upcoming events, networking
opportunities and other information in our newsletter instead of explaining
exactly how some of these programs benefit our small business owners. The
majority of our members are small businesses and the following programs are
presented by the Chamber to assist you in promoting your business, networking
with fellow chamber members and problem solving. We hope you will take
advantage of these events.
Business Builders is an interactive forum held the first
Thursday of each month featuring panel discussions and Q&A. Some of
the topics addressed today are how to do business with the City of Allen, the
difference between marketing, promoting and advertising and funding your
enterprise. Upcoming topics include how to do business with the school
district and eliminating the dread of cold calling. Business Builders meets at the Allen Heritage Center at 8:00 a.m.
Membership Luncheons feature speakers from the Small
Business Development Center’s program resources discussing topics related to
professional or personal development. The June 15th luncheon
topic is “Inside the Box” presented by Maxine Shapiro. According to
Maxine, you no longer need to think outside the box. The innovative
environment you crave is already inside the company, team and individual.
Membership luncheons are held at the Hilton Garden Inn from 11:30 a.m. – 1:00
p.m. Reservations are required.
SCORE (Service Corps of Retired Executives) representative
Mel Biggs is in the Chamber office each Thursday afternoon. SCORE
provides counseling to new and existing business owners as well as those
exploring business options. Mel can help in developing business plans and
providing feedback on problems you might be encountering. This service is free
of charge and is available to members and non-members. SCORE counseling
is available by appointment only. Call the Chamber to schedule your
appointment time.
Another resource that we feel is invaluable to our small
business members is the Small Business Development Center at Collin County
Community College. Small business owners/entrepreneurs can get business
advice, information on setting up a new business, how to file for a business
license, etc. from qualified counselors free of charge. Interested
parties should call the SBDC directly for a consultation.
One additional way to make certain that your issues or
problems are addressed is to become involved in the planning of programs and
review of proposed member benefits through service on the Small Business Task
Force. The SBTF meets at the Chamber at 8:00 a.m. on the second Monday of
each month. Your input on this and other committees assures that your
voice is heard! Please join us in making your business a success!
