Historic stone dam preservation wins award
The City's efforts to preserve its historic stone dam have been rewarded with a Texas Historic Restoration Award from Preservation Texas. The award ceremony will be in Austin on February 18. For more information, contact Tom Keener, Development Coordinator, at (972) 727-0122.
Job listing added to website's Email listing sign-up
The City's current job listing has been added to the Emailing List Sign-up available on the City's website. The first list will be sent on Friday, January 30. Currently, website viewers can subscribe to receive, via email, the City Council agenda, the weekly media tip sheet and the City 6 (COA-TV) schedule. Viewers can subscribe to as many topics as they'd like and can unsubscribe at anytime. More topics will be added in the coming weeks from other departments. Citizens Fire Academy
The Allen Fire Department is now accepting applications for the Spring session of the Citizens Fire Academy. The classes run from 7-9:30 p.m. on Thursdays for ten weeks, beginning on March 18, at the Ronald Gentry Training Center, 310 Century Parkway. The class is designed for anyone over the age of 18 who lives or works in the City of Allen. Officer joins Community Relations Unit
Officer Gerald Jones was transferred to the Community Relations Unit on January 21 to replace Officer Tim Dorsey, who retired. Officer Jones previously worked in the School Resource Officer Unit. For more information, contact Capt. Robert Flores at (972) 727-0204.
Bach to Books - Library Spring Art Series 2004

  • February 3 - Allen High School Choir will present "Rhapsody and Rhythm."
  • March 2 - Allen Philharmonic Quintet will play a medley of classical and baroque selections.
  • March 23 - Allen Authors' Night: an informal discussion, conversation and book signing with highly acclaimed Allen authors including:
    • Jim Cline, author of "Small Percentage," and the soon-to-be-released "Small Percentage Retribution" and coauthored "Website Sound"
    • Parris Afton Bonds, author of "When the Heart is Right" and 35 other novels
    • Laura Cobb, author of "Most Likely to Succeed: How to Assure Your Child's Success in School"
    • Patrick Seaman, coauthored "Website Sound"
  • April 27 - 2nd annual Jazzy Night at the Library: The Allen High School Jazz Band will perform popular Big Band swing music, ballads and contemporary jazz.
Spring SeniorNet Computer Classes Announced
Senior adults 50 and older can register for the spring computer classes scheduled to begin in March and April through the SeniorNet Learning Center at the Interim Allen Senior Center, 105 S. Anna. For more information, call (972) 727-0155.
Classes scheduled for spring include:
  • Intro I - Computer Basics, Mouse and Keyboard Skills offered every Wednesday, March 24 - April 14 and again April 2 - May 5.
  • Intro II - Basic Computer Software Uses offered every Tuesday, March 23 - April 27.
  • The Internet - Explore the World Wide Web offered every Thursday, March 25 - April 15.
  • Email - Correspond with Friends and Family via Your Computer offered every Thursday, April 22 - May 13.
Allen Parks and Recreation Begins Urban Walk in the Woods Program
Nature lovers will enjoy the new Urban Walk in the Woods Program to be offered through the Parks and Recreation Department this spring. The program features three different classes in park and greenbelt areas around the city. The classes will be led by various naturalist and wildlife experts in the area. Featured classes include Wildflowers 101 on Saturday, April 17; The Big Picture - Landscape Photography on Saturday, May 15; and a children's class Bugs, Birds and Buds - On Nature's Team on Saturday, June 19. Class fees are $5 per participant. Look for more information in the Parks and Recreation summer activity guide to be out in March.
