Leadership Allen Happenings
by Brian Bristow, Class Secretary
Leadership Allen Class XV got an early start on Friday, December 19th chugging coffee at 7:30a.m., chasing away red-eyes and getting psyched up for a full day of learning about local government. Before the day was through, the Class had seen government in action on both the municipal and county levels. Extending last month’s focus on leadership development, Mike Mirau, President of Personnelity Performance Solutions, Inc. led the group through a session on time management. He encouraged the group to assess their own current strategies for managing time, both at home and at work, and consider ways to improve their skills in this all important area. At precisely 9:00 a.m. the Class, led by Sally Leeper of the Allen Planning Department squeezed into the Collin County Commissioner’s Court room to witness firsthand a session led by County Judge Ron Harris and his four commissioners. The day’s agenda included presentations from a private-sector energy consultant whose firm is preparing an update of the County’s Energy Conservation Management Program, and the Director of County Public Works reviewed the activities of his department over the past year. From the Commissioner’s Court, the Class proceeded to the District Attorney’s office to visit with Assistant District Attorney Greg Davis. Mr. Davis explained the role of the DA’s office in trying both misdemeanor and felony cases and how county grand juries are selected and who can serve on them. Lunch was had at Two Row’s restaurant, where David Hoover, Planning Director for Allen introduced the Class to Allen Mayor Steve Terrell and Allen City Manager Peter Vargas. Both City officials answered questions from the Class and gave an overview of current happenings on the City horizon. Back at City Hall, the Class finished the day gaining further insights into various City departments. Tim Dentler, Director of Parks and Recreation, Barbara Beuhler, Library Director and Richard Troung, GIS Administrator each talked about their own administrative realms. One of the most current presentations was that of the new Public Library, in which a “tour” of the new building floorplan was given. Next month: Class XV strikes it rich with Economic Development!
