Local Option Election Remarks
by Kurt Kizer, Allen Citizens for Economic Growth

As you may be aware, there is currently an effort underway to include on the May 15 local election ballot two propositions that would allow for the legal sale of beer and wine in the City of Allen.  One proposition would allow for the sale of alcohol in restaurants thereby eliminating the existing "club" requirements.  The other proposition would allow for the sale of beer and wine in grocery and convenience stores.

Allen Citizens for Economic Growth is the political action committee that was formed to make this happen.  We feel that the passage of these propositions will be beneficial for our community in a number of ways including generating additional tax revenue for the community, decreasing the burden and cost for restaurants who choose to sell alcohol, making the purchase of beer and wine for our citizens more convenient, and improving the ability of our community to attract additional businesses.  The board of directors of the Allen Chamber of Commerce has endorsed this effort.

If you have not already done so, I would like to encourage members of the Allen Chamber of Commerce to support this effort by signing the petitions needed to add this to the May 15 ballot.  Signatures are currently being collected at Albertson's on Central and the local Kroger's stores.  If it is more convenient, you may also come by the Chamber office to sign the petitions.

Thanks for your support.

Kurt Kizer, Treasurer
Allen Citizens for Economic Growth

The Allen Citizens for Economic Growth is moving forward with getting the petitions signed to support a May election for the sale of beer/wine in Allen for off-site consumption and the sale of alcohol in restaurants/bars without private club status. In just one week we've collected 2,000 of the 5,000 signatures needed (approximately 40%) and we've run out of money. Without financial support from companies and individuals we will not be able to continue the work to get the remaining signatures needed.

We are diligently seeking donations from individuals and organizations that have a vital interest in this economic issue. If this doesn't pass, restaurants/bars in other cities would have an unfair competitive edge over Allen's.

We have several levels of commitment from which to choose.

Platinum        $2500 and above

Gold               $1500-$2500

Silver             $500-$1500

Bronze           $250-$500

Passage of this referendum would directly benefit Allen restaurants and grocery and convenience stores but all of Allen stands to gain in the additional sales tax revenue these sales would generate. We are trying to keep Allen's money in Allen.

Please help in any way possible.  If there are any questions please call me at (972) 743-0440.

Regards
Andre' DuBos
