Leadership Allen
Happenings, November 21, 2003
Leadership Allen Class XV spent Friday, November 21
st
learning about local health and human service programs offered by various
organizations in and near Allen. The
Class gained valuable insight about potential opportunities for individual
volunteer service work to fulfill requirements for graduating the Leadership
Allen program.
At the onset of the day’s session, and as an ongoing part of
the nine-month training program, the class was introduced to a local leadership
development professional. This month’s
facilitator was Mike Mirau, President of Personnelity Performance Solutions,
Inc. Mike introduced the Class to his
formula for concepts for success, focusing on the importance of setting
personal and professional goals, and reflecting on the integration of our goals
with our skills, knowledge and attitudes to bring about improved results in any
situation.
Judy Webster, Director of Development for ACO then led the
Class on a tour of the organizations’ headquarters in Allen, and The Samaritan
Inn in McKinney. From its offices, ACO
directs numerous programs, including meals-on-wheels for home-bound persons,
thanksgiving dinner for the underprivileged, and a resale store among
others. The Samaritan Inn provides shelter, food and general support for
the homeless and jobless population.
A visit to the Collin County Health Care Services office
gave the Class insights on how health care services are provided at the County
level, through immunization and education programs that deal with subjects
including substance abuse. The Class was then given a tour of
Presbyterian Hospital of Allen by Class vice-president and Presbyterian
employee Crispin Hocate. The tour
included an overview of the hospital’s upcoming facility expansion program and the various departments of the
facility. The tour was concluded with a
visit to ACO’s Upscale Resale Store where donated clothes, toys, and other
goods are sold at prices affordable to underprivileged individuals and families.
At the end of the day, the Class elected to undertake the
design and development of a local memorial to veterans of all American wars and
conflicts. Each Class member
volunteered to participate in one of five project subcommittees: fund-raising,
design, community action, non-profit, and construction. Class President Dave Sterling will serve as
the project manager and community liason.
