Disability Scholarships
Sponsored by the Dallas Mayor's Committee

DMC Scholarship Program

Disabilities do not acknowledge gender, ethnic background, age or social status. Some are born with disabilities and others are disabled at the drop of a hat, due to illness or accidents. Disabled people however, do rise to the top, through sheer determination and grit and with the help of technology, there is very little that can’t be accomplished. Personal triumph is evident from the scholarship applications received by the Dallas Mayor’s Committee for the Employment of People with Disabilities. The DMC is an organization dedicated to enriching the lives of people with disabilities and works with the Governor’s Committee and other city committees to make the state of Texas one of the most progressive states in the hiring of the disabled. The DMC Board of Directors is a group made up largely of high-ranking HR professionals of corporations headquartered in Collin County.

The DMC scholarship program was established to recognize and aid deserving students with disabilities in the pursuit of continuing education.

Completed applications with supporting documentation must be postmarked by May 31, 2003 in order to be considered. Applications must include the following information: applicant name, address, contact information (phone, email, or other) and a summary of academic background summary, extracurricular activity, school(s) accepted for enrollment, projected enrollment date, intended course of study and financial need.

Applicants must have a disability as defined by any of the following criteria: high school students eligible for services under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act under section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act. Students who are eligible for educational accommodations under Section 504 and the Americans with Disabilities Act at a college or university, trade school or vocational training center. Persons who are eligible for services from the Texas Commission for the Blind, Texas Rehabilitation Commission, or Texas Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. A person who is certified as having a permanent disability by a letter from a medical or psychological authority with an accompanying release of information letter from the applicant. A student who provides a letter from a college/university or academic institution certifying that the student is eligible for special services to accommodate their disability with an accompanying release of information letter from the applicant.

Upon making application for the DMC scholarship, applicants must have been accepted for enrollment to a college, university, trade school, or vocational training center, and be pursuing, or planning to pursue a full-time post secondary course of study as defined by the educational institution.

Applicants will be selected on the basis of one or more of the following considerations: academics, work experience, community involvement, extracurricular school activities, and financial need. Letters of recommendations from faculty, employers, or community leaders are a favorable consideration. (Limited to 2)

The DMC offers scholarships each year in the amount of $500.00 not to exceed $1,000.
