The County Line

In the 1999 county bond election, voters approved almost $5 million in bonds so that Collin County could partner with local cities in theexpansion and in some cases the creation of their parks programs.  With Collin County being one of the fastest growing counties in the nation, voters realized that it is critical that we preserve some open spaces before they become glass and concrete.

Within the last eighteen months, Collin County has awarded over $3 million to local cities and other entities for parks.  This $3 million has played a major role in generating over $14 million in parkland preservation and creation countywide.  The Collin County Parks Advisory Board recently announced for their recommendations for the third round of open space grants.  Listed below are the entities, their projects and the proposed award:

City of Dallas    Preston Ridge Trail                               $230,000

Lovejoy ISD                            Hart Elementary Ball Fields                   $26,000

City of Wylie Community Park                                   $47,143

City of Wylie                            Birmingham Park                                  $100,000

City of Princeton                       City Park/WWII POW Camp              $ 47,000

City of Anna                             Anna City Park                         $ 72,000

Blue Ridge ISD                        Environmental Center                            $  7,500

City of Prosper/ISD                  Partnership Parks Project                     $173,047

City of Lucas                            Lucas Community Park             $ 56,250

Blue Ridge Sports Assoc.         Ball Fields                                            $18,900

Trinity Trail Assoc.                   Trail Development                                $  9,255

City of Farmersville                   City Park/Public Restrooms                  $28,800

City of Celina                           Celina Municipal Park               $103,000

City of Blue Ridge                    Blue Ridge Community Park                 $35,896

Heard Museum             Trail Enhancement Project                    $33,000

City of Frisco                           Rowlett Cr. Hike/Bike Trail                  $250,000

The above recommendations will be considered and voted on by the commissioners’ court at our October 7th meeting.  These grants will also represent the end of the funding from the 1999 bond election.  However, this is a very popular and productive program and our citizens’ bond committee is working on a similar program for the county’s 2003 bond election so we can continue to assist cities and other entities in the preservation of open space.

(County Commissioner Joe Jaynes currently serves as County Judge Pro Tem.)
