Initiative

by AAEA Newsletter
The Clear Skies Initiative can pass if the Congressional Black Caucus supports the plan. Of course, the CBC should have assurances that vulnerable communities will be protected in the president's plan to use an emissions trading market mechanism to promote scrubber installations in power plants.

CBC & Bush: Energy & Environment
Energy, Forests, ANWR & Nuclear Waste
http://groups.msn.com/AAEA/cbc1.msnw
by AAEA Newsletter Staff
The Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) has opposed President Bush on 3 out of 4 major energy and environmental issues in the past two years: 1) Energy Bill, 2) Arctic National Wildlife Reserve, and 3)Healthy Forest Initiative. The majority of the CBC supported the President in 2002 on permanently storing nuclear waste under Yucca Mountain in Nevada. Two CBC members serve on the House Energy & Commerce Committee: 1) Congressman Al Wynn (MD) and Congressman Edolphus Towns (NY). We need black ownership of coal, oil refineries, natural gas, power plants, oil, solar and wind power farms.

AAEA Briefs Rev Al Sharpton For Presidential Debate
Environmental & Energy Issues Addressed By Sharpton
http://groups.msn.com/aaea/announcements...
by Derry Bigby
African American Environmentalist Association (AAEA) President Norris McDonald recently briefed democratic presidential candidate Rev Al Sharpton at his New York Headquarters on environmental issues in preparation for the League of Conservation Voters (LCV) presidential debate in Los Angeles, California on June 26, 2003. They reviewed the Energy Justice Act of 2003 and Environmental Justice Act of 2003 drafted by AAEA. They also covered a wide range of other environmental issues from off shore oil drilling and air pollution to forest policy and water resources. It will be interesting to see how much support Rev Sharpton receives from the environmental community. The environmental movement is now a $6.4 billion per year multinational industry. LCV is the largest green group contributor to political candidates. However, the LCV PAC only contributed $6,000 to the entire Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) in the 2002 elections. LCV also did not contribute very much to the Republican Party, but contributions to House Republican congressional candidates far exceeded contributions to the CBC.

Bush Administration Good On Diesel
Get The Soot Out
http://groups.msn.com/aaea/dieselemissio...
by AAEA Newsletter Staff
EPA is drafting regulations to strengthen protections against diesel emissions. Although many environmental groups are reluctant to praise the administration for anything, AAEA believes that the commitment to reducing diesel pollution is admirable. When NRDC praised President Bush on this issue, they were shamed into submission by other environmental groups. We urge NRDC to stand by good policy.
